Hey guys:
Two things, both related to Australia, oddly enough:
1) The Ice Cream Hands: First off, I just want to say that I really think
these guys are the real deal... their four albums (especially "Memory Lane
Traffic Jam" and "Broken UFO") are about the best that modern guitar pop has to
offer. They're actually the band that caused me to find NotLame, Audities, and
this entire crazy little scene. I read a little online about them (they opened
for FOW on the European portion of their "Utopia Parkway" tour), downloaded a
few MP3s (who says downloads kill sales?), and wanted to buy some albums--but
couldn't find them anywhere! That lead me, of course, to NotLame.
But I guess the band is in a bit of a state of limbo right now. "Broken UFO"
didn't sell particularly well and the band's record deal in Australia is up.
Chuck Jenkins is currently working on a solo project and the band are working
on a few new songs for an upcoming "Greatest Hits" compilation while they
ponder their future.
I got an email from Smiley (he's their drummer) last week and he said the
band is looking for a new manager (the other one got a sweet new job) and I think
they're also in the process of looking for a new label; i.e., someone to
finance another record. I figure this is worth mentioning because I know there are
a lot of list members here who feel as strongly about the 'Hands as I do.
And, if you've never bothered to check them out before... um, do that. I
sincerely doubt you'll regret it; their albums only grow stronger and better with each
successive listen. I would say that a week doesn't go by when I don't pop one
in at least once, which is about the highest praise I can give. RIYL: Crowded
House (big time), Fountains of Wayne, Squeeze, Splitsville, Lynchpin.
Hoodoo Gurus: Has anyone heard their new album, out now in Australia? And
does anyone know of a place where I can get it for a reasonable price, OR if it's
going to be released either domestically (US) or in the UK? Everyplace I can
find it it's retailing for around US$30, even at my store (though we don't
currently have a copy at my location anyway).
Thanks and have a nice day! --Jason
