The guy who wrote that Simpsons episode chose Albuquerque as the city that
was trying to steal the Springfield Isotopes because at the time, the mayor
of Albuquerque was rather desperately trying to lure a team back to the
city, our own minor-league team having been snatched away by (I believe)
Portland, Oregon. When we did finally get a new team in 2002, it was
pretty much unanimously decreed that their name would be the Albuquerque
Isotopes. (It fits even without the Simpsons reference: ABQ's main
employers are the nuclear labs.)
