"No Second Chance" was released in 1977, and like a lot of Charlie's album covers, it contained a photo of a woman on a bed falling out of her lingerie with a copy of Allen Ginsberg's Howl lying beside her. Anyway, I remember the 2 first songs from this album were quite good; 'Johnny Hold Back' and 'Turning To You'. In fact, 'Turning To You' is quite power-poppy. Does anyone remember this album (or the group)?<<

Mark:

I remember Charlie very well; they were among my favorite groups of the late '70s, and I think that NO SECOND CHANCE, along with LINES (1978) and FIGHT DIRTY (1979), represented their best work. Still have all three on vinyl, as well as their self-titled 1983 release on Mirage Records, which included their sole U.S. Top 40 hit, "It's Inevitable." Loved their signature close harmonies, the jazz-influenced drumming of Steve Gadd, and the catchy pop melodies that group leader/ chief songwriter/ producer Terry Thomas (guitar, vocals) seemed to crank out almost at will.

Renaissance issued an 18-track best-of on CD (including both "Johnny Hold Back" and Turning To You") in 2000. Not hard to find, if you're interested.
