I saw them open for... egad... Styx in Greensboro in 1978. Fairly
unremarkable as I didn't rush out and buy their records. They had two
drummers, one of whom I later learned was Steve Gadd. Of course, in
those days my mom gave me $5 a week for cleaning the bathrooms,
vacuuming and dusting. If I could get a ride into town to School Kids
records, I could afford one album at their awesome price of $3.99. I
had to work two weeks and save for double albums like UFO's Strangers
in the Night. I had to really be choosy about which LP's I bought.
Even though I saw them, I wasn't gonna take a chance on Charlie. I
got burned by albums by the Godz (highly touted in my bi-weekly bible
of rock, Creem), The Werewolves (sucker for a fancy window display at
Peaches) and a few others.
Loved those Charlie album covers. They were certainly trying to
appeal to my randy 15-year-oldness.
