Hi all,
Plowing through the digests after an annual spring training/Opening Weekend vacation ... I'll de-lurk to fess up that I'm a full-time journalista, for 30+ years, the first 21 of which were as a sportswriter and editor. Now I work for the Tribune Co.'s biggest paper (hiya, Other Tribuners) as an assigning editor/music writer for the Calendar section. I don't envy freelancers, not for a second. Pitching is hard, writing is hard, getting paid can even be hard -- hell, some of the stuff I assign for this little million-plus circulation rag pays at a rate of less than 50 cents a word. Oh, and the editors can be pricks.

So I salute freelancers and tip my ballcap for those of you whose (unpaid) work I've seen in 'zines and on music websites. People do read that stuff.

I do know people who make a living off it, but for the most part it took them years to get established.

Cheers,
Bronson
