The Darkness and the Wildhearts at Avalon, in Boston.........now, I know the Darkness has fueled more than a few heated discussions, and as a very early fan of theirs, i have to say, that tonight's all-ages show was nothing short of AWESOME, and a reminder that visceral, loud rock and roll can be incredible and inspiring yoo......some of you know my CV, and no one is a bigger fan of Rickenbacker jingle jangle pop than me......but.....

I remember all the talk about 'originality' and 'joke band' and 'are they serious?' and i have to say, who gives a fuck? It was loud, tight, arrogant, and most of all, FUN......i'd rather see these guys look like 80's metal castoffs in goofy outfits than see some static, self serious 'pop' band stand there and stoically, and boringly deliver their songs....in this climate of rancid lite adult crud like Norah Jones and Maroon 5 (yeah, yeah, I do remember Kara's Flowers, and do you hear one iota of their pop smarts in them now?) isn't there SOME consolation that some performers don't take music SO frigging seriously? Remember when a band made you feel like they were GLAD you were there to see them, and went that extra mile to give you a show for your hard earned buck?

anyway, off my soapbox.....

Openers the Wildhearts were BREATHTAKING....super tight set, great songs, tho some of the newer ones were less hooky, but incredible energy and a great front man in Ginger.....they even did a cool version of the "Cheers" theme in honor of their Boston show.......cool and loud and they won the audience over......the singer's comments about 'you should all be proud to be Americans' seemed heartfelt, not to mention his nod to Cheap Trick!

the Darkness came on to much pomp and Thin Lizzy pre show tape....they are so tongue in cheek and fun that I thik you can forgive the occasional bombast.....and yeah, some of the stage stuff is cliched, but so what? Which would you rather have: Jimmy Buffett and his asswipe Parrotheads fans or these guys?

I AM in love with rock and roll, STILL, and despite my increasing disappointments with pop.......

Jim
