For me, radio is almost 100% a car thing and has been for some time.
While my cars have always had tape players (not yet CD, for various
reasons), there are a number of factors that have caused me to hear radio
from time to time:
-forgot to bring tapes
-sick of the tapes I have with me
-only going a few miles and too lazy to get a tape out
-commercials during Howard
-local amazing station WFMU (which I think you can get, Josh) playing
something I'm not into (www.wfmu.org)
-tape player broker (early 90s)
-in someone else's car
So I guess I've answered my own question: As long as radio remains the
primary source of piped-in music in cars, and is therefore by default
listened to my large numbers of people, it is worth saving.
