Hey music fans:
Just thought I'd pass on some recommendations for anyone
jonesin' for some new indie pop. These are all on my heavy
rotation list right now...
CAREEN - s/t
Saw this band live a few weeks ago and they blew me away!
Amazingly polished, tight, acoustic-driven retro pop. The Figgs meet
the Kinks with some New Wave synth flair thrown in...and topped off
with some amazingly catchy choruses. They're playing IPO Chicago
in a few weeks, I believe. Check 'em out: www.careen.net
LAZY SUSAN - Never Better
From down under...
A perfect blend of breezy, uncomplicated rock that recalls the pop smarts of Squeeze the and richly melodic sensibility of Neil Finn/Crowded House. Innovative melodies flow effortlessly around a clean, driving pop backdrop and the vocals are always at the forefront with bountiful harmonies to boot. Reminds me what I miss about Split Enz. Awesome!

THE KICKS - s/t
Southern-fried POWER POP from Little Rock, AR!!! Put them in the same camp
as the Katies, Superdrag...even a little bit of Weezer. Big, loud, full-bodied rockin'
power pop with hooks left and right. You *can* have your rock and melodic bliss on
the same plate! www.xsrecords.com
DUVALL - Volume & Density
As far as I can tell, much more interesting, melodic and engaging than the Caterer brothers' previous incarnation (the Smoking Popes). If you can imagine Morrisey fronting a power pop band it would be Duvall. "Standing at the Door" is *the* power pop song of the year...hands down..
THE MOOD ELEVATOR - Married Alive
The song "Boycott" (from the 2001 IPO comp) is worth getting the CD alone. The overall style is a little all over the map (less rock...a little more sonic experimentation) but these guys craft an interesting take on pop music with quirky, jump-start melodies and arrangements...and Brendan Benson guests to boot!
Enjoy!
Jeff
