While talks are still under way, it looks like Brian will have 2 releases out this year on a major label (non-Capitol). The first will be his new album of all-new material which features several high profile guest artists (like Clapton and Winwood). That's probably a mid-summer release. THEN the official release of Smile should occur in the fall. This is looking to feature all new recordings of the Smile material with Brian's touring band playing. Brian and Darian went through the vaults to listen to the original tracks as a reference point of the recording.

The deal is still being worked on...

Chris

Hello Andrew,

I got my version of "SMiLE" from someone else -- I
don't know Annie Wallace. What did Annie Wallace do?
Here's a recap of what my friend did, taken from
something I posted to another list:

>>The album that's been in heavy rotation in my CD
player these past few days -- finally ousting the
excellent, soul-wrenching new Todd album -- is a
'final' version of Brian Wilson's legendary "SMiLE",
lovingly, painstakingly hand-assembled by an extremely
anal-retentive Wilson devotee who happens to be a good
friend of mine. This friend recently attended what I
believe was Brian Wilson's second London performance
of "SMiLE" earlier this year.

Upon my friend's return to the states, he gathered
together his not-inconsiderable collection of "SMiLE"
session bootlegs and began the task of re-creating the
London "SMiLE" set. He used what he called "the
readily available bootleg of the first London show" as
his template (which itself shows up in a couple of his
edits); it took him a few weeks of intense editing,
but, sure enough, he did it (I told you he was anal).

Now, I've heard a dozen or so different "SMiLE"-era
session bootlegs here and there, and -- while I've
often quite liked what I've heard -- I wasn't exactly
blown away in the same way that, say, Pet Sounds blew
me away. The bootlegs I heard sounded unfocused,
unnecessarily 'trippy', and the work of extremely
stoned individuals. Additionally, the handful of 'fan
complied' versions of "SMiLE" I've heard in the past
sounded just as unfocused, unnecessarily 'trippy', and
the work of extremely stoned individuals.

However, the album -- in the sequence as per the
London set -- is nothing less than a revelation. The
'final' "SMiLE" has a consistency, a continuity, that
I could never have imagined -- it is truly
progressive. It's now crystal-clear to me that Brian
Wilson, did, indeed, have a master plan for the
"SMiLE" concept, and it is uncompromisingly, mind
bogglingly brilliant. I daresay that, with "SMiLE",
Brian Wilson reached the pinnacle of a creative arc
which, in my mind, places him squarely in the same
company as ultra-composer George Gershwin --
seriously. "SMiLE" is Wilson's "Rhapsody in Blue", a
joyous, intense song-cycle with so many stylistic
shifts the mind is left reeling -- yet it still
'feels' like an utterly coherent statement. Fuckin'
wow.

Some serious accolades are due to Darian Sahanaja, he
of The Wondermints (and Brian Wilson's musical
director, of course), for helping Brian (and Van Dyke
Parks) bring "SMiLE" to it's ultimate realization,
it's glorious fruition. I've heard first-hand accounts
of Darian's involvement, and he is truly the glue who
brought -- and held -- the project together. Word is,
there'll be an official release coinciding with a US
tour later this year -- keep your face peeled and yer
digits x'd.

Gee, 2004: Brian Wilson, Todd Rundgren and Mike
Keneally albums. This looks to be a watershed year for
incredible music.<<
