As I said in a later post, I've heard that DCW is a marked improvement over
their other records -- and I'm certainly willing to believe it, as Trevor
Horn has produced several of my favorite albums of all time, with ABC's THE
LEXICON OF LOVE and Art of Noise's utterly magical '83-'84 work at the top
of the list -- but I've not yet heard it. (There's occasionally the
perception that music writers get all their records for free, but I'm here
to tell you, that's not even CLOSE to being true. The album is on my
mental list, but given my track history with the band it's in the
subsection marked "If I see it in the used bins at Disc Diggers for
cheap.") What I said about their earlier records is that even though I'm
utterly mad for this style of music as a general rule, I find Belle and
Sebastian's version of it to be too slight even for me, I think they're in
tremendous need of a guiding hand-slash-editor (they're second only to
Guided By Voices -- a band I love -- when it comes to releasing
inconsequential singles and EPs between albums), and there's a certain
level of coyness in their lyrics and presentation that's a turnoff for me.
(The "for me" should be emphasized there -- as Steve pointed out,
occasionally it seems that one needs to reiterate that a big honkin' IMO
should be assumed at the beginning and ending of all of everyone's Audities
posts. Frankly, my opinions don't even matter to ME half the time, and
there's no reason at all they should matter to anyone else.)
