The influence of The Kinks can manifest itself in so many different ways.
For example, with T. Rex, Marc Bolan's fey dandy persona is an extension of
the Ray Davies found on songs like "Wicked Annabella". With many acts, the
influence is more in the lyrics department -- Mr. Davies is the king of
observational character study. Furthermore, while other bands of the era
were heading into psychedelia, The Kinks swerved into music hall and
pastoral territory. Blur's "Country House" and a lot of Madness's pure pop
material are examples of heavy Kinks influence. As for Mr. Partridge, a man
who said The Kinks' "Autumn Almanac" is the song he most wished he had
written, songs like "The Everyday Story of a Smalltown" are in that Kinks
vein (and I would say a lot of recent Colin Moulding, like "Frivolous
Tonight", owes a heavy debt to The Kinks). As for The Jam -- songs like
"Smithers-Jones" are v. Kinksy and they did a smashing job on "David Watts".

This is a really brief analysis. I can also hear some pretty interesting
melodic influence on a host of bands -- for example, the upcoming Franz
Ferdinand single "Dark of The Matinee", has a lilt in the chorus that sounds
like Raymondo could have written it.

And let's not forget their influence on Van Halen...
