When the American Film Institute 100 greatest list came out Roger Ebert made
a comment that you're not supposed to agree with all 100 movies. Hopefully
there's a large common ground, but there should always be differences
between people when "ranking" art or picking favorites.

I always disagree with music best of lists on many levels. Are we talking
most influential? Most consistently great career over many years? Outright
the most talented?

I think you'd be hard pressed to not put the Beatles on such a list, but I
would also put the Stones on that list and I know a lot of people would
disagree. For me the Who is most glaring omission. Most of my personal faves
(XTC, Boomtown Rats, Sonics, Buzzcocks, dBs, Cheap Trick etc) wouldn't make
such a mainstream list.

I love Wire and the Replacements, but when bringing the list down to 10
bands I couldn't imagine either of them making it. And for all the impact
the Sex Pistols had, they only made one album. But the Clash should be on
the list based on their quality and impact. I really like Zeppelin while
still thinking they get a bit TOO much praise, but I was surprised to not
see them mentioned.

I don't know how others approach these lists, but I have two different
mindsets. For my year end top 30 they are strictly the albums I enjoyed the
most during the year - some of the albums that make the list I would even
have a hard time recommending to others, but for some reason they just spoke
to me. I have my list of 20 favorite bands, but I don't necessarily think
that they're the greatest bands of all time. I have an undying devotion to
the Equals, but I have no problem with the fact that I've never seen them on
another best of list.
