I sort of hate to voice some disagreement with the
raves over Prince. I'm a major fan of his '80s work
and still think he's incredibly talented. But I was
disappointed the last time I saw him. I had two main
reasons for this.

First, the songs were bowdlerized. He'd already
become a Jehovah's Witness and was censoring the
"naughty" parts of his songs. Rather than hear a
little bit of "Darling Nikki" as a tease, I'd prefer
him to stick to "clean" material if that's how he
wants to be.

Second, there was waaaay too much medleyfication. As
others have noted, he has too many great songs to play
them all. So he tries to cram bits and pieces of them
together. I'm not a fan of medleys as a rule--I want
songs, not parts of songs. The concert was almost an
endless medley, and that wore on me, no matter how
well-performed it was.

I wish he'd just pick some of his better material and
play full versions. That would be a show I'd enjoy a
lot more. My dream show would include most of his
guitar-heavy material. As it is, I'm somewhat
reluctantly sitting out this tour (although impending
back surgery would make my ability to attend iffy at
best, anyway). I have memories from 1988 to go on.

Randy

P.S. Though he was showboating on the R&R Hall of
Fame Awards performance of "While My Guitar Gently
Weeps," I thought he was fantastic. He's one of the
few from whom I can tolerate that kind of showing off.
