Got to see him a year or so ago in a good venue - our
arts centre theatre, it was really good except for the
standing up for three hours killing my back. He was
waaayyy more crowd friendly than I imagined -
thought the media shy persona thing might extend to
the stage. Had a great bandleader thing going, talked
lots to people in the audience, did a duet of a james
taylor song with a girl from the crowd, had people
onstage dancing, great lights and staging, did a bunch
of hits (after teasing with the 'I don't do that stuff
anymore' speech). His band ended up at a jam night
after the show playing blues with the local
guitar slingers. Classy bunch.

Michael adds:

You are not kidding! This was the only concert that
I've ever been to that sitting down was not an option.
He did his show here on Maui just a couple of months
ago. It was outside and it still had the feel of a
dance club. Almost three hours long and just like
your town - he and his bandmates ended up at a local
joint to play some more.

The only artist that I could compare him to live would
be James Brown without the guitar playing. He owned
the crowd.

He does have a huge catalog of songs, so there is no
way he could please every fan...but the performance
alone is worth the admission. We weren't teased at
the concert but all the radio advertisements claimed
that "this would be the last time ever" he would cover
his 80's material.

I didn't know that Candy Dulfer was part of his band
and was blown away when she came on stage. She always
got a lot of radio airplay out here. "Lily Was Here"
with Dave Stewart and Candy Dulfer still gets played
like it is a brand new release! I guess that there
are not enough instrumental releases hitting the
airwaves.

Outside of performing during the George Harrison
tribute at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, his songs
in the beginning of the show give you just a taste of
what his live show would be like.

His guitar playing is incredible. When he sits at the
keyboard it is a mind blowing performance. Take this
from a casual Prince fan. It is a show not to be
missed.

Aloha,
Michael McCartney
