Just had to share a recent bit of good fortune:

My wife surprised me last week by secretly writing to Ben Eshbach of The
Sugarplastic in honor of my birthday, and arranging for him to send me a
sneak peek at some of the songs they're working on for their upcoming
album (did I mention that I have an amazingly cool wife??).

I guess her sad tale of how I would celebrate my dreaded 40th by taking
my 3 kids to a Wiggles concert was enough for him to take pity on my sad
life. The bottom line is that a couple of days ago I opened the mailbox
to find a very funny little note from Ben along with a CDR of four
unnamed tracks from "Will". Luckily, they're different than the two
posted on the Tallboy records site.

I was already looking forward to this release, but now I can hardly
wait. The tunes he sent me are uniformly excellent; very melodic, and
have that definite XTC/Beatles/math geek thing going on that I've loved
about all of their best previous work. The last song (sorry I don't
have the titles) can only be described as a lullabye by way of Lewis
Carroll --sunny on the surface, but with an uneasy dark undercurrent.
I've long admired their ability to incorporate such a genuine childlike
sensibility in their songs, and it definitely seems to be continuing.

From this sample at least, it sounds like the new one will be more like
their first two albums, and less psychedelic and fragmented than Resin was.

Anyway, just wanted to share my good fortune and thank the band publicly
for such a kind and generous gesture. Definitely pick this one up when
it's released this spring. If you liked any of their previous stuff I'm
sure you won't be disappointed!
