Based on your post, welcome to the asshole camp Shawn.

I disagree with you, and normally I'd just dismiss your point, but since you
brought it up...
Every point somebody makes on this list isn't valid to every subscriber, and
for you to demand some sort of quorum on issues of women's objectification
on a power pop mailing list seems a little out of bounds to me.

>to paraphrase Bob's quote - Great band, great song,
>great video. Period. In other words, your opinion is
>WRONG. That's really, really lame.

I'm sorry, but I'm with Bob on this one. Yes, the video is tongue in cheek,
but it's also pretty obviously geared to attract the REGULAR MTV viewer, not
just the small and opinionated power pop crowd. I thought the video worked
both in concept and execution and I don't think that Fountains of Wayne
brought society down even a smidgeon.

>the fact that when you say "fireman" and
>"policeman" and "mankind," and you ask kids
>to tell you what those things mean, they tell
>you that those are things that apply to MEN

Then teach your kids to be smart and look at the world and make some
decisions of their own. It's an imperfect world and there are a lot of tough
choices and viewpoints that have to be learned, tested, reviewed, and
revised throughout life. Maybe I'm just set in my ways, but I'm going to say
"fireman" and "policeman" for quite some time. I'll also most likely
continue to use phrases like "Mother Nature" and "Lady Luck".

And in reference to your condescending and self-back-patting story about the
book you read about the woman in Iran that refused to wear the veil, which
you closed with
>Why would she waste so much time on such a petty and
>meaningless issue as a piece of clothing? After all,
>that didn't really MEAN anything? Did it? DID it?

I thought you were rambling at first, but that second "did it" won me over,
especially when you capitalized it. The two points are so remotely linked
that it dilutes your whole point to try to link them in such a ham-handed
way.

After all of these side conversations about the social significance of a
rock video I'm still more concerned with why "Bright Future In Sales" wasn't
the second single off the FOW album. They could have done a nice "Office
Space" parody video that would have only offended those who can't yet get
their shit together.

nap: Hummingbirds first album (is it their only album?)
