> I'm puzzled that so many people in such an otherwise reasonable group seem
to think that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is somehow worth more than a
fart in a windstorm. What does it MATTER if the Monkees make it in?

It doesn't, oh puzzled one. It's no less or more important a topic than
"songs named after cars" or "Bands with three great consecutive albums" or
"Mexican Wine" or any other thing we bandy about. No one has lost their
senses, it's just a discussion...I don't think anyone's panties are in a
twist. The women on the list seem unruffled as well.

I look at the R&RHOF as what it is - a goofy "Hard Rock Cafe" museum with a
several interesting exhibits, an overpriced gift shop and a great
conversation starter. Oh, and once a year, some really poor testimonials,
some really witty testimonials, and the occasional great performance (Prince
this year) that makes tuning in worthwhile. I'll repeat my earlier
statement - my rock and roll hall of fame is in my head and in my record
collection, and that's ALL that matters in the long run.

>This could be because they had so many different people writing their
songs, and one could argue that this should take a few Hall Argument" points
away from them, but to me their uncannily original sound, combined with
their sheer staying power, are huge testaments to their being inducted.

Lots of groups had multiple songwriters or "ghost" musicians, so they
weren't alone. I think the problem the R&RHOF has is the same one the
Baseball HOF has - what does "fame" mean? If it really means "famous",
someone who has left an indelible mark during their time, then The Monkees
and Pete Rose (respectively) are no-brainer shoo-ins. But then they also
have the challenge of defining "rock and roll" next. :)

less coffee,
