While I would like to apply that well-worn cliche "never say never" to The
Monkees making the Hall of Fame, it's clear that their chances are pretty
slim. Like Carl and several other Auditeers, I would love to see them get
in. As great as their records were, perhaps their strongest case for being
in the Hall is, despite the fact that they were tremendously influential,
there have been very few bands over the past 30 years that actually sound
like The Monkees. You'll hear several bands being cited as "Beach Boys
influenced", "Stones Influenced", or "Beatles Sound-A-Likes", etc...but the
Monkees are very rarely cited as a reference point in reviews of CDs. Some
might claim that this is because they're not well-thought of enough to be
used as a reference, but I think it's more likely because their sound is so
difficult to imitate. This could be because they had so many different
people writing their songs, and one could argue that this should take a few
"Hall Argument" points away from them, but to me their uncannily original
sound, combined with their sheer staying power, are huge testaments to their
being inducted.
