Sorry - I haven't been reading posts super-closely, so
I'm not sure how much of this has been mentioned...

Bee Thousand (1994) by GBV is widely considered to be
the band's masterpiece, with "I Am a Scientist" the
gem of the thing, in my opinion -- one of my favorite
songs of the 90s ("I am a pharmacist, perscriptions I
will fill you/potions, pills, and medicines to ease
your painful lives/I am a lost soul, I shoot myself
with rock n roll/the hole I dig is bottomless/but
nothing else can set me free...").

However, if you are put off by lo-fi, this record is
most likely not for you. Although it cleans up a lot
of the problems from earlier releases, it still has
that low-budget 4-track feel, and there are plenty of
song fragments and some good ideas that are never
finished.

If you're a fan of bigger, brighter, cleaner
production (which many people on this list are), you
may be better served by 'Isolation Drills,' or even
their most recent, 'Earthquake Glue,' both of which
are full of catchy songs, some of which make it beyond
the three-minute mark.

A pop note: 'Do the Collapse,' which has some good
moments, but is generally a problematic record, was
produced by Ric Ocasek.
