And in an interesting converse of that, back in the early 90's, Polish
composer Henryk Gorecki had a massive (by classical standards) popular "hit"
with his 3rd Symphony.  Very much of the eastern mystical/minimalist school
espoused most notably by Arvo Paert.  Very intense and moving stuff.
