I was thinking about the classical music thread last night and began to
formulate a short list of pop stuff based on classical music.

So far, I could only come up with Eric Carmen's 1-2 Punch of Rachmaninoff
based gems, "All By Myself" (Piano Concerto No. 2) and "Never Gonna Fall In
Love Again" (Symphony No. 2) and Billy Joel's "This Night" (Beethoven
"Pathetique" Sonata No. 8).

Of course, there are more literal renderings of classical works, like Yes's
"Cans and Brahms" (Brahms Symphony No. 4) and half of the recorded output of
ELP, but I'm thinking more specifically of songs that are based on harmonic
or melodic material but are ultimately something new.

What else is out there? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Christopher
