Hey David:

Sting?

Interesting thought. My friends all know that "david"
is david bowie, but i don't actually think he's earned
that solo sobriquet in the wider public. though if
anyone said "ziggy..."

What Kelly's getting at, I think, is that so much of this sort of thing
depends upon the people involved in the conversation. I have several friends
who are diehard Who fans, and in any conversation with them that deals with
music "Pete" is the immediately-understood shorthand reference to Pete
Townshend. But that wouldn't work in a discussion about music with my
non-Who-diehard friends; it probably wouldn't even work here on Audities, a
list loaded with Who fans, unless the Who had already been referenced in the
discussion and the implication was thus clear. Same with "Brian" among my
friends who are Beach Boys mavens.

I think what you're noticing is
the uniqueness of some people's names - anyone would
know Ringo, but unless you said "John" in the context,
as mark did, of the whole four (or maybe just john and
paul, even) I don't think we'd all IMMEDIATELY leap to
john lennon. Or maybe WE would, but not as many
people would who call Bruce "Bruuuuuce!"

I mean really: what other Bruces are there? Besides NL
bruce, naturellement.

As Sherman said, when you put the word "pop" immediately behind the word
"Bruce", I don't think of Springsteen ... I think of the Coloradan making
the goofy face on the cover of the latest Not Lame mail catalog. The word
"pop" changes the entire context. If you put the word "rock" next to
"Bruce", I might be more inclined to think of the guy from Joisey.

And truthfully, if someone posted, even here,
regarding "Jason," I wouldn't be sure who we were
talking about...but then, chicago is a long way from
LA.

Definitely agreed. Say the word "Jason" to me in a discussion about music,
and my brain leaps to the words "... and the Scorchers". That's partly due
to personal taste (I like Falkner, but I *love* J&TS), and partly due to the
fact that Jason Ringenberg has a much higher profile here in Chicago than
does Jason Falkner.
