<<Growin' Up - Any Trouble (The Turtles? David Bowie?)>>

the bowie version is on the rkyodisc reissue of "pin ups," which i think is out of print. i love bowie and i quite like springsteen, but i've never liked bowie's springsteen covers (he also did "it's hard to be a saint in the city"). the material just seems kind of alien to him.

<<Cadillac Ranch? (Status Quo? Warren Zevon?)>>

don't think zevon ever recorded it, but he played it live on occasion. he and springsteen were buddies.

<<Johnny 99? (Los Lobos? John Hiatt?)>>

the definitive (if almost too obvious) cover of "johnny 99" is by johnny cash. it was the title cut of an early '80s cash album on which he also covered springsteen's "highway patrolman."

<<From Small Things Good Things One Day Come (Dave Edmunds?)>>

edmunds' recording was actually the original. one of many songs springsteen handed out to others. and it sounds pretty much like a dave edmunds song.

<<Dancin' In The Dark>>

not sure if i've ever heard a good cover of this one, but it's a pretty damn brilliant pop song (even if his own version has some rather dated '80s production touches). the arthur baker 12-inch remix, which actually got a lot of radio play at the time, is spectacular. this is probably the wrong list to be asking, but someone really, really needs to put out a comp of baker's '80s remixes.
