In addition to COLLEGE RADIO outlets...XM and Sirius Satellite
radio offer a nice middle-finger alternative to commercial radio. Of course,
it's a subscription based service and you have to have the hardware
installed in your car. But 50 stations of commercial-free music
availability is certainly enticing...especially if you're a music fan and
do alot of driving!
Also wanted to comment on Anna's post re: Indie 103 in LA....
It seems commercial modern rock radio...especially in big urban markets
like LA, New York, etc... is starting to see more dramatic shifts in
programming from loud rock (ie: Linkin Park, Incubus, POD, Tool, etc...)
to more indie-centric major label rock (Nada Surf, Interpol, Postal Service,
Strokes, etc...) Live 105 (here in the Bay Area) has dramatically moved
their
programming in this direction over the last few years. I call it the
soundtrack to
SPIN Magazine, basically...

When some clever car audio manufacturer figures out how to stream internet
radio to a moving vehicle, I will be a happy, happy girl.
