Colter, who is in the band, also works in commercial radio. I think he's
seeing the writing on the wall. He left a local station that got sold
twice, the second time to CC. He's now running a little "classic rock
station" that's sort of lame. We were talking about satellite radio,
and he said on of the CC station's salesmen has X-M now!
Can't even listen to the stations he sells.

I saw this all go south in the early 70's when the sales people started
moving in to programming. I've got my show on the college station here,
and I just don't worry about the rest. My show is often #1 in the
ratings. Now that we've just boosted our power to 12kw we cover a huge
chunk of the outlying areas. What do I play? what ever I think is good.
I try not to lean too too far left, but I slip in bits of extreme stuff.
On the other hand I play more different songs by faves like the Beatles,
Beach Boys, Who and Stones than any 10 classic-oldies stations could
imagine. my play lists are posted on the Career site...send me a
request.

At KGLT there are 8 shows a day, many with two djs alternating weeks.
How many formats is that...112 maybe. As you can imagine, it covers
almost every taste possible. That does annoy some who like things
uniform and predictable. They send out a flyer every semester with the
shows, and people do tune in their faves.

I'm sorry about the death of radio. I grew up with the greatest radio,
KYA and then KMPX/KSAN. I think college radio is the only bright spot,
and even that can be awfully narrow cast. When people ask me what I
play, I really can't give them an answer that they understand I just say
the best of recorded history. one of the advantages of working in the
biz since I was in hi school in the 60's. There are a lot of records in
the basement, and I try and play them all...
