Wow, okay - originally I didn't want to waste space explaining his
relationship to Sony (partly because I don't understand it completely
myself, and haven't been nosy enuff to ask), but let me see if I can explain
what I know: He owns two companies that do re-releasey kinds of things.
Songhaus Publishing, which does his European distribution mostly, and
(Sony)-Rewind records. He owns the Rewind part. But with Sony's blessing.
Basically, he goes out and finds LP's that fit his bill (whatever that might
be), and if Sony owns it, he presents his case to the SonyPowersThatBe.

Dane Spencer is a great guy. From what I understand he once worked for a CBS
affiliated label in the late '70s/early '80s. And he managed to not burn all
his bridges in the process. So...now that he runs his own record label he's
been able to go back and nurture those long-standing relationships into
licensing deals with CBS's existing corporate entity SONY.

Dane released two CDs by a Canadian heavy metal act from the '80s called
Kick Axe. At the time my relationship with SONY Canada was non-existant, so
Dane put the releases out in the US (with my liner notes), and I imported
them back into Canada while SONY snoozed up here. Not sure what the final
figures for each disc were, but I managed to move a few hundred on Dane's
behalf. Alas, the CDs are now out of print [he does small runs]...and I am
currently pursuing the Kick Axe albums myself -- now that SONY Canada are
dealing with me direct.

I believe that Dane can probably get his hands on a lot of stuff...and like
my company and Not Lame, he can pretty much license stuff from any label he
wants....as long as they're willing to play ball -- and we, the indie label,
cough up the licensing fees.

Jaimie Vernon,
Bullseye
