The thing with classical is the performance can vary widely depending on
the conductor and orchestra, or soloist. Even though it's played off a
score, a lot of the details were not written down. I have multiple
performances of pieces and the difference is shocking.

What I've been doing is buying up big parts of collections when they show
up at the thrifts. I don't mind owning well cared for albums. I used to
work in a shop that sold nearly 50% classical so I had to learn a little,
at least how to find stuff. There were often very intense "discussions"
about performances between the staff and customers. I also was sort of
clued into what labels might offer the best performances, and learned a
few names. I just buy stuff I think I might like. I'm not big on opera or
any sort of vocal stuff.

One thing I do like is recordings done on "original instruments". As you
might know, things changed as the technology got better. An old piece
conducted by Ormandy played on modern instruments is going to sound a lot
different than an ensemble playing the piece on period instruments.

It's sort of like buying jazz, it's a broad field, and there are so many
different approaches.

I'd suggest you go to the library and listen to some things and decide
what you like. Listen to different recordings of some pieces so you can
see what different conductors to with the orchestra. Might also talk to a
knowledgeable sales person in a shop.... if there is still such a thing!
