I finally got time to watch the weeks TV on tape this afternoon, and I
caught 'Kingdom Hospital'. They featured some great music on there,
including FoW's Red Dragon Tattoo about 3 times over. (I am partial to that
song. See my Sig?...) And the Gourd's cover of Gin and Juice. Shame it
was ... weak.... in other areas.

In you I confide / Red dragon tattoo / I'm fit to be dyed / Am I fit to have
you?

"Isolation Drills" & "Do The Collapse" are my favorites because they
are the most "produced" sounding (the latter produced by Ric Ocasek)
and tend to highlight the band's meldocisim alot more than their earlier
stuff.
Everything else tends to have a mid-fi "sameness" quality...yet is the
signature sound for most of their work. I'd recommend "Mag Earwhig" as
a 3rd fave.

I should also point out that...once you see them live...you will be sold
on them for sure.

Billy,

The Shadows rock! I wish I had a chance to see them
as well! If I remember correctly, back in the day,
didn't the USA Network's "Night Flight" carry a
Shadows concert film every Friday or Saturday night
for about a year or two? It seemed like it got about
as much play as Neil Young's film.

Another Shadows Fan,
Michael McCartney

Just got my package from NOT LAME with Paul
McCartney's guitarist. He was great on stage with Sir
Paul at the two concerts I had to pleasure to see.
His album is great.

The latest catalog from NOT LAME is awesome. Nice work!

for years and years, i had a cassette with van ( actually 'ivan'!)
morrison's song 'friday's child' on it. i loved this song dearly. the
tape did what tapes always do, and now i cant find a copy of 'the story of
them' for under $30. dont want it on vinyl. this geriatric typewriter
of mine cant download songs. can anyone help, for a swap or debt of
gratitude or simple cash on the barrelhead? thanks, harris

Pat Sansone will be a part of the now 6 member touring
lineup of Wilco too.

saw Autumn Defense here at IOTA last month and it was
a great show.

here's the actual announcement from a few weeks ago)
regarding Wilco (from their website):

Wilco's touring lineup for the foreseeable future
features two new players: keyboard/guitarist Pat
Sansone (whom many of you know from the Autumn
Defense) and guitarist Nels Cline (whom some of you
may have seen sit in
with the band last year at the Auditorium Theatre in
Chicago).

so, to review, the new group:

Jeff Tweedy: gtr, vox
John Stirratt: bass gtr, vox
Glenn Kotche: drums, percussion, etc.
Mikael Jorgensen: keys, laptop
Pat Sansone: keys, gtr, vox
Nels Cline: gtr
Everybody: cowbell

Message-ID: <BAY10-F73Ui3BfRfTSN00005b37@hotmail.com>

A while back I signed up to British Sea Power's periodic e-mail newsletter,
which is worthwhile just for the deliberately purple prose and hilarious
content. Then did a tribute to the member of Mud who recently passed away:

"Shakin’ Stevens’s guileless rock’n’roll puritanism can’t help but take us
to the equally artless glam rock
of Mud, whose singer Les Gray has just died.

Mud laid waste to 1970s UK chartland with the likes of Tiger Feet. This was
a
different era, when pop stars hadn’t been to school let alone stage school.
They
were siphoned directly onto the three-shows-a-night club circuit from a
previous
career as child-labourers in sunless blacking factories. The almost
inevitable
rickets helped these showbiz beginners acquire potent novelty dance steps.
It
was a milieu of bracing simplicity in all respects. As Les said in 1994 in
explanation of his band’s name:

“I don’t know why we called ourselves Mud, but I know we wanted a short name
like The Who as it would look good on posters. If you’re on at festivals
with a
lot of acts, you want big lettering. You don’t stand a chance if you’re
called
The Incredible String Band.”

Presumably no one explained this to Smokey Robinson And The Miracles or
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, or indeed British Sea Power. What chance
our
boys? Not only do they suffer from far too many syllables, but now they are
working with a band called The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa. What hope for this
pairing at the summer festival season?"

Speaking of BSP, the band put on a nice show last night -- their songs
aren't always consistent, but they play so well together and the last 20
minutes of the show they blew the roof off the place.

Just got back from visiting with the fambly and had a nice rock and pop
visit
with our own Andrea Kremer at a nicely packed pop show at the Paradise
Lounge. Alas Loveless was not playing but it was good to see so many folks
out to
see some good music!

We are headed back to beantown with puppy in tow this Thursday to attend the
kickoff of the Boston Pop Underground series at the Lizard Lounge in
Cambridge:

Besides the "Best of", I would recommend "Bee Thousand" as a good place to
start. I think many GBV fans might consider this their finest hour. It
contains my favorite Mr. Pollard tune--"Tractor Rape Chain"....bizarre
title, but the greatest melody and heavy fuzz guitar.

The guy is very prolific, so you have to weed through some rocks to get to
the gems....
