I've sometimes wondered if my fondness for short songs derives in part from
intense exposure to K-Tel at an early age. (My sister had a lot ofn the
early ones, and I had some of the later ones, when they started getting the
occasional new wave song on them.) In fact, my biggest complaint about the
current state of power pop as a whole is far too many 4-minute songs that
are really 2:45 songs with too many repetitions of the chorus at the end.

There are many songs that I feel can be improved by just a slight edit, and
as I've been adding stuff to my iPod, I've been known to take the digital
razor blade to songs myself sometimes. Sometimes it's as simple as just
hacking the last six or seven minutes off of the High Llamas' "Track Goes
By" (leaving a few minutes of the extremely extended fade, but not so much
that I'll just get bored with it) but I've also been able to use my beloved
Cool Edit 2000 to do things like take the extended mix of After the Fire's
version of "Der Kommissar" that's on a cheap '80s-nostalgia CD I got at
Target or someplace and cut out the redundant bits of filler to return it
to the single version I had in junior high.

According to iTunes, my iPod library is currently 1385 songs in 3.82GB, at
128kbps per. At this rate, I'm probably going to get around 6500 songs on
there rather than the advertised 5000, even taking the FAT and other
software into account.
