The journey of Talk Talk from the new-wave dance band of "The Party's Over"
through their more "serious music" phase of "Laughing Stock" and "Spirit Of
Eden" to the solo "Mark Hollis" release reminds me of the transformation of
another band/artist of the same era, namely Japan/David Sylvian. Sylvian
started out as a glammed-out, gravel throated New York Doll impersonator,
changed to Bryan Ferry sound-alike crooner and ended up as a new-age,
ambient "artist".

Back in the days when music video was new and everything was innovative
simply because it hadn't been done (to death) before, the video for "It's My
Life" somehow stuck out. One lasting memory for me was seeing that video on
"The New Music"'s year-end best-of show. One John "J.D." Roberts introduced
it as "Not the best video of the year, but maybe the most important".
