One of the seminal musick-listenin' experiences of my
yout': driving around in my friend's mom's new
volkswagon in high school, which had a much better
stereo than her previous cutlass; 16 years old, a
Friday in the first days of spring before a summer
that presaged great things, downtown chicago at dusk
right when all the cute college boys were out
wandering around, lapping up some Baskin Robbins and
listening to "life's what you make it" at
just-pre-distortion volume with all the windows down,
some hallucinogenic goodies percolatin' through the
system and Mark Hollis shivering his way into my
spinal fluids. The streetlights were just turning on.
I'll never hear that song without feeling a certain
anything-is-possible frisson of absolute joy.
Man.
