Well, I've finally picked up a copy of Adam Daniel's first/ only album, BLUE POP (APG Music, ADBP001, 1999) a couple of years after hearing selected cuts placed on some pop-friendly TV shows--e.g., "Cured" and "Her Shake" on FELICITY--and I'm floored. From breezy pop rockers to hushed ballads, I don't hear a bad track. In the best one-man-band tradition, Daniel apparently wrote all these songs, sang all lead and backing vocals, played virtually all the instruments, and co-produced the album. This is as impressive a debut effort as I've heard in years.

So what's Daniel been up to since? According to AMG, performing live, both solo and with a band, the Adam Daniel Frequency. (Did he/ they play one or more IPOs? "Battle Song," from BLUE POP, is included on Not Lame's INTERNATIONAL POP OVERTHROW VOL 3.) The artist's own website, www.adamdaniels.com, has no news item more recent than 5/04/2003, when a new song, "Dusted"--a four-track demo--was put into rotation on the Unsigned channel at XM Satellite Radio. Finally, Daniel posted to his maillist on 12/20/2003 as follows: "I spent 2003 mostly on hiatus from the music biz. Thank you so much to everyone who e-mailed this year to tell me you're STILL enjoying Blue Pop, and also to ask about and/or demand new material! I'm so sorry to keep you waiting so long! I intend to be back-in-action in 2004."

Anybody know why a recording career that began with so much apparent promise stalled so completely? Based on the recorded evidence, this guy has real talent, and it doesn't seem to have worked out. Whatever the explanation, it's a shame.

But BLUE POP is still available, and it's terrific. (Think Fountains of Wayne, with more heartfelt than humorous lyrics, and you won't be far off.) Pick it up, and play it loud.
