Maybe I don't understand the question, but there are a ton of British
Invaders and related artists whose initial work was produced by others,
and then self-produced stuff catapulted them elsewhere / further:
Steve Winwood
Paul McCartney (although I guess it doesn't count as "greater success")
Pete Townshend
The Rolling Stones
And then there's:
Sting
I'm sure I'm leaving out zillions of others.
