Orange Juice was much more Edwyn Collins' project than James Kirk's -- Kirk
left after the first album, although he did write much of their best early
material, including their signature song "Felicity," which he self-covers
on the new album -- and the material after Kirk left went into a kind of
skewed DIY indie take on classic soul (Collins actually scored a couple of
hit singles in the '90s doing the same thing, "A Girl Like You" and "The
Magic Piper of Love," the latter of which has the best ripoff of the riff
from Marvin gaye's "Hitch Hike" since the Velvets' "Run Run Run." People
tend to like either the early scrappy-guitar-pop Orange Juice or the
northern soul Orange Juice better -- personally, I tend to lean towards the
later material just because I think Aztec Camera and Josef K were going for
the same thing as early Orange Juice and they did it better.
