Not sure if I've seen this CD mentioned here or not, but I just stumbled
onto a truly excellent disc from last year that I know next to nothing
about. It's from James Kirk, and is titled "You Can Make It If You
Boogie". I originally heard about it on Amazon in one of those 'people
also bought' searches. Now after doing some digging I see that he
started out in the indie pop band Orange Juice in the early 80s, and
then dropped out of sight. It seems like I've heard of Orange Juice,
and the AMG listing makes it sound like something I'd like.
This one is all over the board as far as song styles, but through it all
is a very poppy (and slightly twee) sensibility, with consistently
solid melodies. His voice is somewhere between Lou Reed (several years
and octaves ago), and Tom Verlaine. Very sunny sounding record;
occasionally jangly, and more than a little bit sly, with the occasional
tossed-off harmonies and handclaps that seal the deal.
Really solid stuff, I recommend checking it out, especially if you are
at all into the Parasol kind of vibe. Anyone have any more info on him
or Orange Juice?
Thanks,
Shawn Huckaby
