Right, obviously people pick and choose what they like best and choose to
explore, but I don't think that was Stewart's point. He was attacking people who
are egotistical and ignorant enough to declare that "hip hop isn't music"
simply because they don't like it (and that same sentence to anyone who says "___
isn't music" simply because they don't like it). I'm generally with Stewart--I
find that attitude incredibly tiring, and while I think it's FAR from
restricted to Audities (truth be told, this is better than the world as a whole when
it comes to embracing music we're not familiar with), it's sort of surprising
to see it crop up so often amongst a group of people who *are* so
musically-educated and open-minded. No, not everyone will like everything, as we've seen
many times, and yes, it's cool if people want to specialize. But making a point
to throw in snipes stating matter-of-factly that it isn't music because it
doesn't sound like the Beatles is obnoxious and in poor taste.
AUDITIES CONTENT: To anyone who didn't spring for the import, THE CORAL's
second and THIRD albums are being released as a two-fer (with one bonus track not
on either import) today, available many places for a low price (Newbury
Comics is charging $9.99). "Magic and Medicine", the second album, is like a more
mannered version of the first and will likely appeal to many. The second, much
weirder disc "Nightfreak and the Sons of Becker", will be little more than a
curiosity to some, but fans of the more out-there Nuggets-era will be in
heaven. --Jason
