I think there's more to it than that.  People are entitled to personal
taste.  Not caring for hip hop doesn't make you any less a "renaissance man"
than the next guy.  Why wouldn't one expect a listserv devoted to melodic
music to be largely comprised of people who tend not to care for unmelodic
music?

Hip Hop, Opera.  The allure of each is thoroughly lost on me.  Doesn't mean
I am incapable of "getting" that they are legitimate art forms.  Just means
I don't like 'em.  And I've given both a fair shake.  (for the record, I
prefer hip hop to opera.  But that may be because it is usually in English.
Although I'm totally getting into late 60s/early70s Brazilian music, and
that's in Portuguese, so maybe not.)
