He's also quite a singer too. Stewart's point is well taken, though
whenever I heard someone make it (usually in connection with The Roots, who
all play instruments, or Beastie Boys), it rankles me a bit. I don't think
hip hop artists need to show the ability to play instruments to show musical
credibility, any more than Frank Sinatra or Julie London would have had to.
It's almost as if rapping without instruments is somehow not a musical
skill.
While there is still plenty of fine hip hop coming out, I personally believe
that when sampling became a disfavored practice, it hurt the art form. The
collage aspect to the music tracks was, to me, perhaps the most interesting
thing musically about rap.
I realize that this is something that will never go away, as long as people
want to dis rap simply for being rap.
