I'm not sure if the media reporting of Tower's continued troubles
carried anything about this, but it looks to me like Tower caught itself
between rock n roll and a hard place with the dawn of internet. In an
effort to drive business to its on-line operation, Tower offered decent
discounts on-line while (it seems) simultaneously raising its in-store
prices to at or near list.
Coupled with the Best Buy virus, things got uglier in a hurry. But, as
someone else here (Stewart? Jamie?) mentioned, Tower had been having
problems going back to the late '80s. When I was in radio in the
mid-'80s, I can clearly remember that Tower was always on the late
receivables list, meaning they were at least 90 days late paying their
ad bills.
