For years, I would have offered up our own precious
Albany for the title of city w/the best power-pop. In
the grand old 90's, we had a neverending stream of
great power-pop bands--from ones you definitely know
(The Figgs) to ones you might have once heard of
(Bloom, Super 400, The Wait, Lughead) to ones you
definitely should have heard of (Queer for AstroBoy,
The Explosives). And of course, BLOTTO is from Albany.
I guess the scene has changed over the years--the
quality of music is definitely still here, but the
preferred style has begun to lean toward alt-country
and experimental noise-rock. We still have our pop
holdouts, though--just ask David Bash, who invited
both my band (Suggestions) and my pals, the Day Jobs,
to represent at IPO Boston last November.
