Hi all,
I've been reading a few articles about Janet Jackson's "incident" and
it reminded me of the Darkness thing. What I mean is, they're different
facts but both explain the same thing. These last days reading the 300
(or even more) posts about the Darkness one thing that surprised me was
that some people were offended by the first post. Like if the
phrase "Americans don't get it" meant "Americans are stupid because
they don't get The Darkness". Well, I'm spanish, and I don't get the
Darkness, but that's normal. I can say it's because the voice or the
production, but with those arguments I'd do nothing but prove I don't
get the joke. So I guess they're a joke I don't understand, but someone
from UK wouldn't understand Les Luthiers, for instance. It's more
obvious in the case UK-Spain because we don't share the language, but
in the case UK-USA that difference is not so easy to see.
And, about Janet, I think it's more or less the same thing:something I
don't understand. I mean, it's a tit (in fact a big silver sun and a
small part of a tit) and they're going to open an investigation for
that??? Honestly, I don't get it. I'm used to public tv and commercials
here and a tit is something you see if you watch tv just 5 minutes. So,
when I was reading CNN news online and I saw this article
(http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/02/02/superbowl.jackson/) I had to laugh. I
couldn't help but thinking of Ned Flanders and his family:
>>Michael Powell (Federal Communications Commission Chairman) said he
was watching the game Sunday evening with his two children and found
the incident "outrageous." <<
All this only makes sense in a country where "decency" is a keywork.
Seeing all that from here I wonder what's the big deal. I don't "get"
it.
Carol
