Hey Jeff,
There was a song called "Captain Howdy" by Simon Stokes, which reached #90
on the Billboard charts in July of 1974. I don't know the song but I would
imagine it's the one you're remembering, and if it reached #90 nationally
it's a good bet it was a big regional hit where you grew up.
Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles describes Stokes as "R&B vocalist. Leader
of the Black Whip Thrill Band and The Nighthawks". Interestingly, "Captain
Howdy" didn't hit the R&B charts.
