Plus Ike's connection to Texas pretty much stops at "born there"; the family returned to Kansas when he was very small, so Abilene was his real home.
I always thought one of the things that did in Jimmy Carter was his acceptance speech at the 1980 Democratic Convention; the word "nuclear" appeared in that speech so many times that I kept wondering if a Republican plant was feeding the teleprompter...
