Yeah, just to add to my earlier post (because I never seem to fully and
clearly make any point in only one post.. uggh), I didn't think it was solely an
age issue so much as an issue of too many ladder-climbing journalists who were
bored and approaching rock journalism with zero excitement and a decidedly
careerist attitude. This is compounded by editors who want stories about things
that appeal to their demographic--i.e. dadrock and other older-skewing acts--and
you have the recipe for major dailies to have sucky, over-the-hill rock
critics.
And yes, I admit to have some personal bitterness because during my time at
the Globe I fought them tooth and nail to cover things that were new, or
younger-skewing. Heck, I didn't even fight them to let ME do it so much as to do it
at all, and they wouldn't. I'm not saying any of my ideas were brilliance
(many were quite far from it), but many of the things they chose still have me
scratching my head...
And on Adams, I do think he's put a lot of great music out there, but he's
also put out a lot of mediocre music, and his attitude certainly doesn't match
his quality level. I sometimes wonder if the stumbling block is his own ego or
whether he's a victim of his own hype. I don't frankly care--I like music made
by individuals, even if that individual is whiny and annoying--but I think a
lot of people might start getting sick of it soon. --Jason
