At this point in Ryan Adams' career, I'm inescapably reminded of the kid in
elementary school who you could make cry in like 20 seconds or less. Your
school had one too, I'm sure. It was considered great sport among some to
make this kid cry, but frankly, even then all I could think was "What's the
point?" There's no challenge in that, and plenty of fish who aren't in
barrels who deserve to be shot.
I guess what I'm asking is...okay, Ryan Adams is a self-destructive
boozehound who's heading pretty much straight towards total career
implosion. So was Emmit Rhodes. (The liner notes of FAREWELL TO PARADISE
are jsut as "whiny" and "paranoid" as anything I've ever heard come out of
Ryan Adams' mouth, frankly.) So how come Ryan Adams is "hilarious" when
Emmit Rhodes is this heart-wrenching tragic figure?
