First, I wish to thank all the artists on this list --- and those who work at the labels that released these artists' work--- for making what could have been a miserable year (four siblings with different cancers, with '04 looking a lot brighter for all of them, thanks!) so much better. More than ever, music became my escape in '03, and these were my favorite escape destinations---

1. NEAL MORSE ---Testimony. Passionate, proggy, poppy, non-preachy, powerful!
2. SPOCK'S BEARD ---Feel Euphoria. Lots of textures, from pop to prog to metal-ish rock.
3. PILLBUGS--- 3-D Popcycle Dream. Exhuberant, engaging and just very cool pop-psych.
4. PERNICE BROS--- Yours Mine & Ours. The sneak attack of the year
5. PEARLFISHERS--- Sky Meadows
6. SUKILOVE--- s/t
7. CLOUDSMEN ---s/t Was this an '03 release? There was no info on my CD at all. Nines'-related great stuff, tho'.
8. FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE---Welcome Interstate Managers
9. THE EFFECTION--- Soundtrack to a Moment. Punk-pop with style, hooks and humor.
10. BLEU--- Redhead
11. RAY WILSON ---Change. Genesis's last lead singer comes out with a very Peter Gabriel-ish sparkler.
12. OWSLEY ---The Hard Way
13. ORANGER--- Shutdown the Sun. Late entry, with hints of Apples in Stereo and J Mascis.
14. JAYHAWKS--- Rainy Day Music
15. AEROVONS--- Resurrection
16. BARELY PINK--- Last Day of Summer
17. CHRIS VON SNEIDERN--- The Wild Horse
18. JTG IMPLOSION--- Some of the People All of the Time
19. BARENAKED LADIES ---Everything to Everyone
20.FLEETWOOD MAC --- Say You Will
21. EASTERLY--- s/t
22. FEEL--- s/t
23. AUTUMN DEFENSE ---Circles
24. MODEL ROCKETS ---Pilot Country Suite
25. BANGLES ---Doll Revolution
26. RINGO STARR ---Ringo-Rama
27. VERTICAL HORIZON ---Go
28. PALO ALTO ---Heroes & Villains
29. TRUE LOVE --- I Was Accident
30. MICHAEL CARPENTER --- Kins Rd Works
31. GIGOLO AUNTS--- Pacific Ocean Blue

Live shows of the year:
NEAL MORSE, Whittier Center Theater
SPOCK'S BEARD, Imusicast, Oakland
SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES (with PALO ALTO and the CAESARS), Bimbo's San Francisco
COLIN BLUNSTONE & ROD ARGENT (with the AUTUMN DEFENSE), Café du Nord, San Francisco
LOVE with ARTHUR LEE, the Fillmore, San Francisco
IPO-LA with FEEL, the REMBRANDTS, and others
NICK D'VIRGILIO, Imusicast, Oakland

CDs I'll be getting soon from Audities' recommendations:
High Dials, Thrills, Josh Rouse, Rooney

Biggest disappointment of the year: The Thorns. After hearing "I Can't Remember" on the radio a couple of times, I knew I;d get the CD. After giving it a few listens, it struck me as a piece of musical marshmallow. Sweet, but empty.
