Hard to stay in lurk mode when The Monkees are the hot topic...
Album-wise HQ & PAC&J have to top every list; in what order depends
on the listener.( I'd give the slight nod to HQ)
3. the soundtrack from HEAD (great Tork tunes and the reissue has
the concert version of CIRCLE SKY; for 2:10 these guys were the best
live band around!)
4. JUSTUS (more for what it represented, than the finished
product.. LOVED hearing Micky bang the skins again but how could
they ignore song submissions from both Bobby Hart & Chip Douglas??)
5. The 1st lp ( Boyce & Hart pretty much inventing the Monkees'
sound here.. Billy Lewis is a great friggin' drummer!)
6. MORE OF (this loses points for THE DAY WE FALL IN LOVE; decent
Davy tracks stayed in the vaults in favor of this?)
7. PRESENT (an under-rated disc for the most part)
8. INSTANT REPLAY (WHILE I CRY & YOU AND I are 2 of the best
Monkee original compositions ever!)
9. THE BIRDS & THE BEES.. ( it pissed me off that the guys stopped
working together in the studio so quickly, a mixed bag of tunes at
best)
10. CHANGES (some pretty cool bubblegum on here, I love TICKET ON A
FERRY RIDE)
11. POOL IT! (I was SOOOOO disappointed the first time I heard this.
17 years since the last proper studio lp, and not one track has more
than one Monkee on it!)
As far as a full reunion goes, I don't see it but anything's
possible.. hell at this point, Id be happy if the FOUR of them
showed up on the TVLAND awards show as opposed to VH1.. though a one-
off gig (IPO David?) professionally recorded for prosperity would
have my tongue waggin'!
I know Andrew Sandoval had talked at one point about having them
put new vocals onto existing, unfinished backing tracks from 1966-68.
I guess time will tell.
