Take this with a grain of salt, since I only *like* (not love) the Monkees, but I can't imagine wanting more than the MUSIC BOX collection released on Rhino (R2 76706) in 2001. Four discs, 99 tracks, including: much/most of THE MONKEES, MORE OF, HEADQUARTERS, PISCES AQUARIUS CAPRICORN & JONES LTD, INSTANT REPLAY and CHANGES; a couple of cuts each--all I'll ever want-- from POOL IT! and JUSTUS; and single/alternate versions, originally unissued songs, and other semi-rarities from throughout the group's career. All this, along with a 27-page group bio by Andrew Sandoval, and track-by-track notes on the songs by the group members and selected others.
You may not be a "'best of' kind of guy," but MUSIC BOX is a lot more than the Monkees' Top 10 hits (of which there were only six, after all). Unless you're a completist, who'll feel the loss of album cuts like PISCES' "Peter Percival Patterson's Pet Pig Porgy," this might well be enough Monkees for you. Might save you some money too.
