>Your 26 include a few very arcane choices, you must admit.

That's the point.
We're not Best Buy. We don't stock 50 Cent, Britney, or Linkin Park.
Hootie's on the list because they're local.

>I've got kids. I feel responsible to expose
(subject?) them to a very wide range of music which, for better or for
worse, has had real impact on various cultures or has taken music
somewhere unique.

You'd have a ball in our folk/ethnic/world sections. Those Putamayo
compilations (all 10 million of them, it seems) fly off the shelves.

>My point, and once again I wasn't trying to be especially critical of
your own personal taste,

I take no offense concerning my personal taste. Hell, I own all the
Partridge Family albums (some on CD), so my taste is suspect to start with.
:)

I don't buy primarily on my personal taste. That's why I posted here, to
indicate to this list that I appreciated its input into my purchasing.

>is that there is a lot of important music out
there which can and should be available, and when you're spending my tax
dollars

Unless you live in Charleston, SC I'm not spending your tax dollars.
Even then, most of my funding comes from sources other than public funding.

 >and you have a choice between letting my community have
available either I Couldn't Hear Nobody Pray or Revolver, I certainly
hope you pick Revolver.

Really? You've got something against Grammy (TM) nominated black gospel
traditions?
At this point in time everyboby owns or knows someone who owns Revolver.
Hell, I've got 3 different copies. We have a few in the collection, too.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that anyone can walk into Best Buy
and get Revolver et al.
Our mission is to make the fringe available for research and exploration.

>Or else you're fired.
Not likely. I'm pretty autonomous.
Although I did have to withdraw Fritz The Cat from our cult film fest under
some pressure from the Director.

>(Not that what I've done has done any good: my 16-year-old and my
12-year-old prefer Dave Matthews and 50 Cent, respectively.

I know the feeling.
