My background is that I was raised in one non-Christian faith and am now
an atheist. So for me, when someone inserts religion into a song, it
nearly always means that I cannot identify with it in a lyrical sense.
Beyond this, it's hard to express, and probably even harder to
understand, but I have always been in the minority in this Christian
country. Even in the relatively enlightened New York City area, many
people assume that everybody they come in contact with is Christian like
they are. A lifetime of this can make you feel left out at times, like
society has no place for you and makes no allowances for your beliefs.
Over 38 years, I've gotten used to my birthday month being consumed by
Christmas fever, and people telling me they're praying for me, and the
concerned looks when people find out I don't go to church and don't share
their faith. But music is someplace I go to be free of society's
prejudices and shortcomings, and it's a major turnoff for me when overt
religion creeps into my little hideaway.
I don't want this to come off like I am anti-religious. I think everyone
should do their own thing and follow their own beliefs, and let others do
the same. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one . . .
